We love to fossick around a good garage sale, salvaging the unique and interesting to add ambience and style to your vintage wedding or special rustic event. How much more do we love a quaint seaside town that once a year hosts a giant garage sale across the entire village? Be still my beating bargain hunting heart! Brunswick Heads in northern NSW (about 15 minutes north of Byron Bay) is worth a detour off the Pacific Highway if you enjoy vintage charm & hunting for a vintage wedding dress. A few blocks either way of its gloriously original Art Deco pub you’ll find 12 second hand shops from the exquisitely curated and upmarket (The Fabulous Mrs Fox and Vintage Interior Pieces) down to relatively unplundered Vinnies and Red Cross stores. Worth a visit any day of the week, Brunswick Heads is a little slice of heaven the weekend of the Old & Gold Festival.
A little like Sydney’s Garage Sale Trail, the beauty of Bruns’ Old & Gold is that this ‘All Town’ garage sale has 83 households holding garage sales all within walking distance of each other, alongside a large indoor collectibles fair in The Memorial Hall, a clothes and bric-a-brac fair in the school grounds, and a book fair in the Library.
The grey skies and rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the punters, while the townspeople shrugged and said ‘it always rains on Old & Gold.’
Raining cats and dogs…
While we’re all for a no-expense-spared wedding with all the frills, a thrifty bride-to-be could find herself a stunning bridal dress for next to nothing here (more to spend on the reception!)
We came across several actual vintage wedding dresses, mostly over the top frou frou confections, but one dress was genuinely classy – we could imagine a super model making a chic statement in this little number.
The pic doesn’t do justice to the exquisite lacework and line of this mint condition 1960s vintage wedding dress, a steal at $20.
And how about this for the honeymoon? A symphony of synthetic in this negligee set, be careful with that post coital ciggy honey…
Also mint condition, also $20. There’s the vintage wedding dress and wedding night sorted with change from a fifty.
All it needs is “Just Married” sprayed on the back window, and few tin cans tied to the back bumper…
Old & Gold would also be an excellent hunting ground for those looking for a wedding gift with a difference too, a good proportion of items on sale probably were exactly that decades ago.
Multiply this by a thousand, and you have the Old & Gold Festival.
While A Little Character specializes in hiring out distinctive vintage & rustic pieces of furniture for weddings & events, we also have a soft spot for the kind of fancywork a bride of yesteryear would have laboured over for her glory box; linen embroidered doilies and napkins, lacework tablecloths, crochet blankets. Favourite find of the day was a hand-stitched pansy doily worked in satin stitch, beautiful colours and needlework still vibrant many decades on. The price for this sweet piece? One dollar! If you like to pick up something old for very little gold, Old & Gold is the festival for you.
Detail of the pretty pansies on a hand stitched doily, mirrored on the other end.
This simple Art Deco plate (another Old & Gold $1.00 find) works nicely with the needlework flowers; we’re picturing it piled high with sweet treats on one of A Little Character’s tables… yum!
